Indian coach Pravin Gordhan has been forced to give up his post and announce his retirement from the I-League as a result of the team’s financial mismanagement, officials said.

Gordhan, 63, made his debut for Sri Lanka’s side at the 1998 World Cup in England. His teams fell out of the finals after he was replaced as coach by coach Muneeruddin, who was sacked in June last year.

“The only other option for me was to join one of the two Super League sides, and that’s what the plan is now,” Gordhan told The Indian Express.

Gordhan was recently on holiday in England and was due to take an official call with the Sri Lankan team, but decided to play instead.

“I have no problems with the cricket side, as Sri Lanka has a good team. We will play India and England,” he said.

Muneeruddin and Gordhan clashed over their working relationship in the latter’s first two years as coach but became team-mates once he was sacked.

The Sri Lankan coach hapronxas been a member of the Indian coaching fraternity for seven seasons, but has not managed any of their two series together and now he wants to put aside personal problems to return to India, sources said.

“He has asked me to reconsider my decision of quitting the I-League, and that may mean that he will return to India soon,” the Sri Lankan coach said.

Aizawl said on Friday the match between the two countries will now be a friendly with the hope of an India-Sri Lanka game eventually being scheduled in the next few months.

“I have spoken with Muneeruddin about the matter as it was the one that caused problems for us,” he said. “It was his first attempt at coaching in Sri Lanka but it didn’t work out.”
